How to Make a Chocolate Bundt Cake

  • Start by preheating the oven to 325°F and generously greasing and flouring a 10-inch Bundt pan.
  • Melt the chocolate chips gently over low heat, stirring until smooth, then set aside to cool slightly.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the cake flour, salt, and baking soda.
  • Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs one at a time.
  • Mix in the vanilla, followed by the melted chocolate. Stir the brewed coffee into the buttermilk. Don’t skip the coffee. You won’t taste it, but it deepens the chocolate flavor and makes the cake taste richer.

  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the buttermilk mixture to the batter, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean.
  • Cool before flipping. Let the cake rest in the pan for about 10–15 minutes, then invert to avoid breaking.
  • Then dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Do I really need buttermilk?

Buttermilk adds moisture and tenderness. If you don’t have it, whole milk with lemon juice works well.

Can I make this cake ahead of time?

Yes! This cake actually tastes better the next day. Store it covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Can I add a glaze or frosting instead of powdered sugar?

Absolutely. A chocolate glaze or simple vanilla glaze pairs beautifully with this cake.
