Why Choose Homemade Pancake Mix?

  • When you create your mix from scratch, you have full control over the quality of ingredients. You can use fresh ingredients, avoiding artificial additives and preservatives commonly found in a box mix.
  • Homemade pancake mix allows you to tailor the mix to your taste. You can adjust the sweetness, add flavorings like vanilla or spices, and even use whole wheat flour for added nutrition.
  • Homemade mixes are made in smaller batches, ensuring that your pancake mix is always fresh, leading to better-tasting pancakes.
  • Making your mix can be more economical in the long run compared to purchasing pre-packaged mixes. You can buy ingredients in bulk and have them ready when needed.
  • Having homemade mix on hand means you can whip up a delicious hot breakfast quickly any day of the week. You’ll only need to add a few wet ingredients like eggs, milk, and butter or oil to make pancakes, saving time on busy mornings.

How to Store Dry Pancake Mix

To store homemade pancake mix properly and extend its shelf life, follow these steps:

  • Use an airtight container, such as a glass jar, plastic container, or a resealable plastic bag. The container should have a secure lid or seal to keep out air, moisture, and pests.
  • Label and date
  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark place at room temperature, such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or temperature extremes, as this can affect the quality of the mix.
  • Avoid moisture
  • Over time, the ingredients in the mix may settle, so it’s a good idea to give the container a gentle shake or stir the mix before using it. This ensures that all the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Is Pancake Mix the Same as Bisquick?

Pancake mix and Bisquick are similar in that they both are convenience products used in baking and cooking, but they are not exactly the same.

  1. Pancake Mix: Pancake mix is specifically designed for making homemade pancakes. It typically contains a mixture of dry ingredients like flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. You add wet ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sometimes oil to the mix to create pancake batter. Pancake mixes are primarily used for making pancakes.
  2. Bisquick: Bisquick is a versatile baking mix and includes a more extensive range of ingredients, including flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and often a bit of fat (like shortening). You can use Bisquick to make not only pancakes but also biscuits, waffles, muffins, and even some savory dishes like pot pies. Bisquick is designed to be a multipurpose baking mix, making it suitable for various recipes.
