These unicorn cupcakes are the perfect treat for a unicorn lover. You can make these cupcakes for any special occasion and they’re easily customizable for your party’s color scheme!
As you know, I love cupcake recipes. These unicorn cupcakes are no exception. I just love how fun and vibrant they are!
Unicorn cupcakes are perfect for any birthday or special occasion. Last year, I made this easy cupcake recipe for a baby shower and they were a big hit!

For these unicorn cupcakes, I’m using my go-to chocolate cake recipe. But a classic vanilla cupcake or box mix is perfect too. You can even add a little bit of food colouring to the wet ingredients of the vanilla cake to add to the unicorn theme.
The frosting is my easy vanilla buttercream that’s dyed 3 different colors. While I’m using these colors, feel free to use any 3 colors that fit with your party’s color scheme.
I’ve done so many color schemes for these fun unicorn cupcakes and I can never decide which is my favorite combination. I’ve done all kinds of colorful frosting: white frosting, pink frosting, purple frosting, blue frosting and now these fun electric colors.
Pro Tip: Do not use more than three colors in your unicorn cupcake icing, as they may not fit inside of the tip of the 16 inch bag.
A lot of unicorn cupcake recipes include molding fondant, I’ve tried playing around with it, but it’s just not my thing. I love how this is a simple recipe, pick up some fun unicorn cupcake liners and toppers and be done. I love how cute the toppers are with the pretty unicorn horn and unicorn ears!
It would be super fun for the kids to even decorate these cupcakes themselves at a party. Just lay out some premade cupcakes, a pastry bag already to go for each child and the decorations. You can easily make a double batch if you’d like.
For your party, you could make a dessert table with my unicorn cake recipe surrounded by these unicorn cupcakes for a really whimsical look.
Don’t let my unicorn cupcakes intimidate you! They’re really rather simple to put together, so much so any novice baker can do it! If you are intimidated, I suggest you read my guide to cake decorating to get a better handle on using piping bags and frosting.

Tip: When making your cupcakes, a great way to get them all to be an even size is to use a large cookie scoop. Then put a large dollop into the muffin tin.
Be sure to let your cool cupcakes completely on a wire rack before frosting them.

Make your buttercream frosting in a large bowl. Be sure that your ingredients are at room temperature. Then, portion out the frosting into the desired icing colors in a separate bowl for each color. You will need just a little bit of color since we are working with bright colors.
Add the colored icing to the 12 inch piping bags without a coupler or tip.
Snip the ends of the tips and set aside.
Place a 1M or 2D Piping tip inside of the 16 inch piping bag.
The tip should be pushed down as far as it can go end it should be cut right underneath the teeth of the tip. You do not want icing caught on the side of the piping bag.
Place the colored bags of icing inside of the 16 inch bag and push them all down so that each of the colors is inside of the tip.

Keep your cupcakes on a flat surface while you are icing them.
Squeeze with even pressure to make sure that all three colors are coming out together. Open up your unicorn cupcake kit.
Place the Unicorn Wrappers around the cupcakes before icing.

Pipe swirls and add sprinkles to the top of the cupcakes.
In the center of a cupcake, add the unicorn decorations to these adorable cupcakes.

Then add sprinkles to your unicorn treats. You can get as creative as you’d like. Try gold sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, pink sugar, etc.

How do I Store These Cupcakes?
Keep your easy unicorn cupcakes in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve them to keep the frosting staying stiff. You can keep any leftover cupcakes in an airtight container or cupcake tin to stay fresh for 3-4 days.
