What are the ingredients in dirt cake?

  • Oreos – Crushed to create the “dirt” layers and topping. They give your Dirt Cake recipe its chocolatey crunch and classic look.
  • Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix – The base of the creamy filling. It sets quickly and gives that rich chocolate flavor.
  • Milk – Used to prepare the pudding and create a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Cream Cheese (softened) – Adds tanginess and makes the filling thick, rich, and slightly cheesecake-like.
  • Butter (softened) – Blends with the cream cheese for extra creaminess and structure.
  • Powdered Sugar – Sweetens the cream cheese mixture without adding graininess.
  • Whipped Topping (like Cool Whip) – Lightens the filling and makes it fluffy and mousse-like.

How to Make an Easter Dirt Cake

  • Start by processing Oreo cookies into fine crumbs. This helps to create a firm crust, but if you don’t have a food processor, place the cookies in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
  • Set aside some for the topping and mix the rest with melted butter. Press this mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and refrigerate.

  • Next, beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk chocolate pudding with milk until thick, then fold in whipped topping.
  • Combine with the cream cheese mixture and spread over the crust.
  • Sprinkle with reserved cookie crumbs and chill for at least 4 hours.
  • Before serving, decorate with Peeps, edible Easter grass, and M&M candies. Press down slightly to secure decorations.

Can I make this without cream cheese?

Yes! If you prefer a lighter filling, skip the cream cheese and use an extra tub of whipped topping for a fluffier texture.

How far in advance can I make it?

You can make dirt cake up to 2 days ahead. Just add the decorations right before serving so they don’t soften or sink into the cake.

How do I store leftovers?

Keep any leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. The cookie topping will soften over time, but the flavors stay delicious!

Can this be made in individual cups?

Yes! Instead of a 9×13 pan, layer the ingredients into small cups or jars for cute, single-serve Easter treats.

How do you keep dirt dessert from getting soggy?

Add the final cookie crumb topping just before serving and avoid crushing the cookies too finely. Make sure the pudding is fully thickened before mixing, and store the dessert covered in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours for the best texture. Adding decorations right before serving also helps prevent excess moisture on top.

Can I make Easter Dirt Cake ahead of time?

Yes! Dirt Cake is actually better when made ahead. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator so the flavors can set and the cookie layers soften slightly.

Can I make Easter Dirt Cake in individual cups?

Yes! Mini cups or clear dessert cups are perfect for parties and Easter gatherings. They’re easy to serve and show off those fun layers.
