How to Make Coffee Cake Donuts

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a donut pan. Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and whisk the milk, eggs, and vanilla in another.
  • Add the shortening to the dry mixture, then mix in the wet ingredients until just combined.
  • Use a piping bag or zip-top bag to fill the pan neatly about two-thirds full.
  • Prepare the streusel by combining brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and melted butter, then sprinkle it over the batter.
  • Press the streusel gently into the batter so it stays put while baking.
  • Bake until lightly golden and set. Watch the bake time closely. These bake quickly, so check early to avoid drying them out.
  • Let cool briefly before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Once cooled, drizzle with a simple powdered sugar glaze and let set before serving or storing.

Is there a difference between coffee cake and crumb cake?

Yes! Coffee cake typically has a softer cake base with a lighter crumb topping or swirl. Crumb cake is known for its thick, buttery crumb layer that’s often just as thick as the cake itself. Both are delicious, but crumb cake leans heavier on the topping while coffee cake is more balanced.
