What are the ingredients in real blackberry syrup?

  • Blackberries – Fresh or frozen blackberries give the syrup its deep color and bold, juicy flavor. When simmered, they break down and create the vibrant, fruity base.
  • Lemon – A splash of fresh lemon juice brightens everything up and balances the sweetness.
  • Sugar – Sugar adds sweetness and helps create that smooth, syrupy consistency. It also acts as a preservative, helping your syrup last longer in the fridge.
  • Water – Water brings everything together, allowing the berries to cook down and release their juices while creating a pourable texture.

How to Make Blackberry Syrup

  • Start by choosing ripe, plump blackberries, then rinse and dry them.
  • Add the berries, sugar, water, and lemon to a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • As the mixture cooks (about 10 minutes), mash the berries gently to release their juices and let it thicken slightly.
  • You will want to add flavor variations while the mixture is simmering. Try adding fresh mint, vanilla, or even a cinnamon stick.
  • Once done, strain out the seeds and pulp, pressing to get every bit of syrup.
  • Let the syrup cool completely, then transfer it to a jar and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
