Prepare the boxed cake mix as directed, fold in the crushed Oreos and bake cake for 22-26 minutes.

After the cake cools slightly, poke holes into it using the handle of a wooden spoon.

Pour the mixture of instant pudding and milk over it, letting it fill the holes.

After pouring the pudding mixture over the cake, let it chill for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to fully absorb the pudding.

Then top with whipped topping and additional crushed Oreos.

If you’re looking for even more indulgence, feel free to top the cake with your favorite cream cheese frosting or your favorite frosting instead of whipped topping.

Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Cover the cake to prevent it from drying out.

Can I make this cake ahead of time?

Yes! In fact, it’s better if you make it ahead of time, as chilling it allows the flavors to combine and set, making it even more delicious. Just store it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

Do you let a poke cake cool first?

Yes, you should for about 10-15 minutes after it comes out of the oven. This helps it firm up slightly, making it easier to poke holes in without the cake falling apart. However, don’t let it cool completely; it should still be warm when you poke the holes. The warmth helps the pudding or filling absorb into the cake better.

What is the best way to poke holes in a poke cake?

The best way is by using a wooden spoon handle. This creates evenly spaced, uniform holes that allow the filling to seep in. Press the handle gently into the cake, about halfway down, and repeat across the entire surface. Don’t go all the way to the bottom of the cake, as you want to keep the cake intact.

You won’t believe how easy it is to make this Red Velvet Poke Cake with Oreos. Perfect for any party!

    Ingredients

    • 1 15.25 oz box, red velvet cake mix plus oil, eggs and water to make the cake
    • 1 package 14.3 oz, Oreo sandwich cookies divided
    • 1 small box of 3.4 oz, instant vanilla pudding
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1 8 oz tub cool whip thawed

    Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9×13 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

    2. Crush 10 Oreos in a small bowl. Set aside.

    3. Prepare the cake according to package directions.

    4. Fold in the crushed Oreos and pour the batter into the prepared pan.

    5. Spread evenly.

    6. Bake for 22-26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.

    7. Let the cake stand for about 10 minutes to cool.

    8. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes into the cake. Go about half way down, not reaching the bottom of the cake.

    9. Mix together the milk and pudding with a whisk until smooth.

    10. Gently pour it over the top of the cake. Allowing the pudding to pool and drip into the holes.

    11. Refrigerate to cool completely, a minimum of 2 hours.

    12. Once the cake is cool, spread whipped topping over the cake.

    13. Crush the remaining Oreos and top the cake with them.

    14. Slice and serve your red velvet oreo poke cake immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
