Start by whisking together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt, then beat butter, sugars, egg, vanilla, and red food coloring.

Mix in the dry ingredients and scoop dough onto baking sheets.

Bake cookies at 350 degrees f for 8-10 minutes and let them cool. Make the cream cheese frosting.

Once your cookies have cooled, you can either spread or pipe the cream cheese frosting.

For a simple, homemade look, use a butter knife or spatula to spread the frosting evenly across the cookie. If you want a more decorative finish, pipe the frosting with a piping bag to create elegant swirls or rosettes.

Either way, the creamy frosting adds the perfect touch to these delicious cookies!

Why is red velvet paired with cream cheese?

Red velvet and cream cheese are a classic pairing because the tangy, slightly savory flavor of the cream cheese complements the rich, mildly sweet taste of red velvet. Cream cheese frosting has become a traditional topping for red velvet desserts, making it a go-to choice for filling and frosting.

Do cream cheese-filled cookies need to be refrigerated?

Yes, they should be refrigerated, especially if they contain cream cheese in the filling or frosting. Cream cheese can spoil if left at room temperature for too long. Storing the cookies in the refrigerator helps maintain their freshness. Make sure to keep them in an airtight container to keep them soft and delicious!
