What is the 3-3-3 Rule for Charcuterie Boards?

This is a simple guideline to balance your charcuterie board so that there is a variety of textures, flavors, and colors for a visually appealing and satisfying board.  Choose 3 of each:

  • Hard, Aged and Soft Cheese Cheese
  • Savory Meats (salami, prosciutto, and cured sausage)
  • and accompaniments (fruits, nuts, and crackers or bread)

What Are 5 Things to Avoid on a Charcuterie Board?

  • Strongly scented items can overpower and dominate other flavors.
  • Too many crackers – A board overloaded with carbs leaves less room for the main attractions like cheese and meats.
  • Messy or sticky foods can make the board messy and less enjoyable to eat.
  • A good charcuterie board balances sweet and savory for variety.
  • Items like fruits and bread dry out if prepped too far in advance.

How Do I Make My Charcuterie Board Stand Out?

  • Use holiday-inspired colors, like red and pink for Valentine’s Day.
  • Include unexpected items like edible flowers, honeycomb, or flavored nuts.
  • Arrange ingredients in fun shapes like hearts for seasonal flair.
  • Use a tiered board, decorative platters, or add height with small bowls and stands.
  • Include handwritten labels for items

How to Arrange Your Valentine’s Day Board

  • Start with the Big Items: Place cheeses and small bowls of dips on the board first. These anchor the layout.
  • Arrange meats and scatter fruits
  • Fill in empty spaces with the smaller candies and nuts to fill in any gaps.
  • Add your finishing touches.

Should I Make a Charcuterie Board the Night Before?

Yes, you can prep your charcuterie board the night before, but keep components fresh by wrapping meats and cheeses tightly in plastic wrap. Store fruits and vegetables in separate airtight containers to prevent them from drying out or wilting. Wait to assemble the board until just before serving to maintain its visual appeal and freshness.
