How to Turn White Cake Mix Into Chocolate

Preheat your oven according to the package instructions on the back of a box of white cake mix.

Start by preparing the white cake mix according to the package instructions in a large mixing bowl. This usually involves combining the mix with eggs, oil, and water with the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Replace one cup of water with 1/2 cup warm melted butter mixed with 1/2 cup chocolate chips, chocolate chunks or other semi-sweet morsels until they melt to further enhance the chocolate flavor and provide delightful bursts of chocolate throughout the cake.

Once the vanilla cake batter is ready, start by adding a 1/4 cup of cocoa powder into the wet ingredients and adjust according to your preference. Make sure that you sift your unsweetened cocoa powder before stirring it in with the other ingredients.

Mix the batter thoroughly, ensuring that all the cocoa powder and chocolate chips are well incorporated. This will ensure that your cake has an incredibly moist texture and a deep chocolate flavor.

Be sure not to overmix – too much stirring will give you a dry cake instead of the perfect cake that is light and fluffy.

Pour the chocolate cake batter into a greased baking pan, spreading it evenly.

Bake the cake according to the package instructions, adjusting the baking time if needed. Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake to check for doneness. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready.

Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack before serving or decorating with your favorite frosting.

Tips for Turning a Vanilla Cake Mix Into Chocolate Cake

  • Since cocoa powder tends to absorb more moisture than vanilla cake mix, you may need to increase the liquid ingredients slightly. Add a bit more water, milk, or buttermilk to maintain the desired consistency of the batter.
  • Substitute some of the liquid in the cake mix recipe with brewed coffee. Coffee enhances the chocolate flavor and adds depth to the cake. If using this ingredient, feel free to omit any milk called for in the recipe and replace it with equal parts brewed espresso / coffee instead. This small change will make a huge difference to help bring out all those yummy chocolaty notes!
  • Fold in a handful of chocolate chips into the batter for extra bursts of chocolate goodness.
  • If desired, Add 2 tablespoons more sugar than called for in the original recipe as chocolate cakes tend to be sweeter than white cakes
  • Enhance the chocolate flavor by adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a hint of almond extract to the batter.
  • Since the addition of cocoa powder and extra liquid may affect the baking time, keep an eye on the cake while it’s in the oven. Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake; if it comes out clean or with a few crumbs, it’s ready.
  • Remember, each cake mix brand and recipe may vary, so adjust the measurements and ingredients accordingly.

FUN ideas. I never thought to convert water to butter. Excellent tip. I wanted to comment, after cooled, I always split my 9 inch rounds in half. I take some jam, add water to it, until it's a spreadable consistency. I put that on thickly to the middles of both rounds. Then, I put instant pudding in between the two rounds. Then, I "frost" with a non-dairy whipped topping (aka Cool Whip). Yes! I add cocoa and vanilla to whipped topping. Have fun with your cake mixes!!

Does this mean you will put 2 cups of water in the cake?

@momma lew, I’m a little confused with the wording “replace one cup of water with 1/2 cup warm butter and 1/2 cup chocolate chips…” are we replacing the water on the box directions? Which water are we replacing? Thank you:)

Hi, I am not really sure what you mean? I don't mention anything about water. Prepare your boxed cake mix according to the directions and then follow the directions I give from there to make it chocolate. 2 cups of water seems excessive for any cake recipe to be honest.
