Like muffins, this blueberry bread is what is known as a quick bread recipe. We call them this because they are a type of bread that uses baking soda or baking powder to rise versus using yeast.

This easy blueberry bread recipe is SO similar to my blueberry muffin recipe. I love how easily muffins can become bread and vice versa!

There is no fancy equipment needed like a hand mixer or stand mixer to make this easy recipe for blueberry muffin bread, which gives it a more rustic, homemade feel.

Can You Use Frozen Blueberries to Make Blueberry Bread?

Yes, you can use frozen blueberries to make blueberry bread. When using frozen blueberries, it’s important to keep a few things in mind:

  1. Do not thaw the blueberries before adding them to the batter. Adding frozen blueberries directly to the batter helps prevent them from bleeding too much color into the bread.
  2. Toss the frozen blueberries in a small amount of flour before adding them to the batter. Coating the blueberries in flour helps prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the bread during baking.
  3. Be aware that using frozen blueberries may increase the moisture content of the bread. This can result in a slightly denser texture compared to using fresh blueberries.

Blueberry Bread Variations:

Here are a few variations you can try with fresh blueberry bread:

  • Lemon Blueberry Bread: Add a refreshing twist by incorporating lemon zest or lemon juice into the batter. The bright citrus flavor pairs wonderfully with the sweet blueberries.
  • Streusel Topping: For added texture and sweetness, sprinkle a streusel topping over the batter before baking. Mix together flour, sugar, and cold butter until crumbly, then sprinkle it generously over the batter.
  • Cream Cheese Swirl: Create a marbled effect by swirling a layer of sweetened cream cheese through the blueberry bread batter. Drop spoonfuls of softened cream cheese onto the batter and use a knife to gently swirl it around.
  • Almond Blueberry Bread: Add a nutty flavor by incorporating chopped almonds into the batter. Sprinkle them on top for a delightful crunch.
  • Blueberry Strawberry Bread: This bread is a delightful combination of summer’s finest berries.

Notes

A note on the debate of fresh vs. frozen blueberries:

Of course, fresh blueberries are always best. But, man blueberry season is short!!! At least here in New Jersey it is! When you use frozen blueberries, they sort of melt in your recipe as they bake. Fresh blueberries stay more intact throughout baking and will have more of a burst when you take a bite.

Adding bananas to the batter before the blueberries provided a wonderful flavor between the blueberries. Tastes even better on the second day.

I followed your recipe and the results were perfect. I made it again with a crumble topping and it was even better. Now I’d like to make it with lemon zest and juice as you mention. Do I reduce the milk amount by 1/3 cup so the liquid portion remains the same?

I made this once already and it was excellent. Would like to try the lemon version. Should I reduce the amount of milk by 1/3 cup so the liquid amount remains the same?
