Homemade Pop Tarts Recipe

Who doesn’t love a pop tart? But did you know that they are extremely easy to make at home? 

These homemade pop-tarts are just as delicious and satisfying as their store-bought counterparts. Make them at home with our simple instructions and enjoy that sweet taste of nostalgia! The pie crust is the best part about these pop tarts creating a flaky crust.

This amazing homemade version will only take about an hour, making it a fun family project. The ingredients are simple and you u can customize with your favorite flavors. They are perfect for a quick snack or an easy breakfast.

How to Make Homemade Pop Tarts Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 Pie Crusts, refrigerated
  • 1/2 cup of your favorite jam + 1 tbsp for the icing
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 large egg + cold water
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • Rainbow Sprinkles

Roll out pie dough to smooth them out on a work surface .

Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut a big square shape out of the dough. Then cut that square into 3 equal rectangles.

In a large bowl, add jam and mix in cornstarch to thicken the jam filling.

Add 1-2 tablespoons of jam to the end of each pop tart.

Make an egg wash by mixing a beaten egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush it around the edges of the tart dough to act like a glue.

Fold the homemade poptarts over and crimp the edges by pressing around the pastry dough with the tines of a fork.

Place each of your toaster pastries on a piece of parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, until the tops of the pop-tarts are golden brown.

Let them cool on a wire rack to room temperature.

To make your frosting, mix together powdered sugar, a spoonful of your jam heavy cream. Start out with a tablespoon of heavy cream and add until you have a nice thin consistency.

Drizzle the frosting over your cooled pop-tarts and add some sprinkles to the top of each tart.

Store in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap.

Filling Variations 

There are endless possibilities when it comes to making Pop Tarts at home. Use your favorite recipe for homemade jam.

Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts with a brown sugar cinnamon filling are one of our favorite tart flavors.

You can use your favorite fruit flavor, like cherries or use a sweet strawberry filling to make strawberry poptarts.

For the filling options, a heaping tablespoon of Nutella or peanut butter are a great option.

You can also make savory breakfast pastry using ham & cheese with cheddar cheese in dough or bacon & egg with cheese.

Can I make homemade pop tarts in the air fryer? 

Follow same directions above, but instead of the oven, place in air fryer for 5-8 minutes on 375. These fry really quick so keep an eye on them! Remove from air fryer and smother in icing.

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

    1. You'll need 2 ready made pie crusts. Roll them out to smooth them out. 
    2. Using a straight edge, cut a big square out of the dough. Then cut that square into 3 strips. 
    3. In a bowl, add your jam.
    4. Mix in the cornstarch to your jam.
    5. Add a little spoonful of the jam filling at the end of each homemade pop tart. 
    6. In a small bowl, crack and whisk the egg.
    7. Brush the egg wash around the edges of the pop tarts to act like a glue to hold your pop tarts together.
    8. Fold the pop tarts over and crimp the edges, pressing them together with a fork. 
    9. Bake your homemade pop tarts for about 15 minutes at 400 degrees, until they are puffy and golden brown.
    10. Let them cool before frosting. 
    11. To make your frosting, mix together powdered sugar, the tbsp of jam and 1 tbsp heavy cream. Stir. Add the extra heavy cream as your stir to get a thin consistency to your frosting.
    12. Drizzle the frosting over the homemade pop tarts
    13. Add some sprinkles! 

Notes

Me, me!! I grew up on poptarts. But I'd much rather eat these than the ones that come out of a box! I love that you use jam in the frosting rather than food coloring. These are so pretty! Thank you for the recipe!
