How to Make French Toast with Texas Toast

  • Use stale bread because it will soak up the custard mixture better without becoming soggy. You can leave the bread slices out overnight to dry them slightly.
  • Take each slice of Texas toast and dip it into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
  • While Texas toast is thicker than regular bread, don’t soak it too long in the egg mixture or it may become mushy. A few seconds on each side should be enough.
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and butter the pan generously as it helps create that perfect golden crust on the French toast.
  • Once melted, place the soaked bread slices in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.

What is the most common mistake in making French toast?

One of the biggest mistakes is soaking the bread too long. While Texas toast is thicker and can handle more liquid than regular bread, oversoaking can make the center mushy instead of fluffy. Another mistake is cooking French toast over heat that’s too high. Medium heat helps the inside cook evenly while still giving the outside a golden brown crust.

How long to soak Texas toast for French toast?

Usually only about 10–15 seconds per side in the egg mixture. Since the slices are thicker, they absorb more custard than regular sandwich bread, but soaking too long can make the bread fall apart. The goal is to coat the bread thoroughly while still keeping the slices sturdy enough to flip easily during cooking.

What can I use in place of Texas toast for French toast?

You can substitute with another thick-sliced bread such as brioche or challah. These breads also work well for absorbing the egg mixture and create a rich, fluffy French toast.
