What are Pasta Chips?

Pasta chips are a fun and crunchy snack made by cooking pasta until it’s crisp, usually in an air fryer or oven. Instead of eating the pasta soft like you would in a traditional dish, you boil it first until just tender, season it with oil and spices, and then crisp it up until it has the texture of a chip.

How to Make Pasta Chips in the Air Fryer

  1. Boil bowtie pasta until al dente.
  2. Dry the pasta well. After draining, let it sit a minute or pat gently with paper towels. Excess water can cause soggy chips.
  3. then toss with olive oil, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parmesan.
  4. Air fry in batches at 350°F until the pasta turns golden and crisp, shaking or flipping halfway through for even cooking.
  5. Let them cool slightly so they finish crisping up, then serve with your favorite dip.

Can I use other pasta shapes?

Yes! Bowties work great, but rigatoni, penne, or rotini also crisp well in the air fryer.

How do I keep them crispy?

Store in an airtight container and don’t cook them until rock hard—let them crisp as they cool. Avoid freezing, as they lose texture.

Can you air fry raw pasta?

No. Raw pasta is too hard and dry to crisp up in the air fryer—it will just burn or stay tough. Always boil the pasta until al dente first, then season and air fry so it gets that perfect golden crunch.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz bowtie pasta
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tbsp garlic powder
  • ¼ cup shredded or grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Cook pasta according to directions on the box until they are al dente in a large pot of salted water.
  • Drain the cooked pasta and put into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add in olive oil, seasonings, and parmesan and mix well, coating each bowtie as best as possible.
  • If using a basket air fryer: Put half of pasta mixture into the basket and air fry at 350 degrees f for 5 minutes.
  • Shake basket and repeat until edges of pasta begin to brown and pasta starts to look a little dry. Empty the basket onto a paper towel lined plate and repeat the process with the remainder of pasta mixture.
  • If using an oven style air fryer: Put half of the pasta mixture in a single layer on your cooking tray. Place in the center of the air fryer oven and cook at 350 for 8 minutes.
  • Using a spatula move pasta around to prevent sticking and make sure as many sides are exposed.
  • Cook for another 6-8 minutes until the pasta is crispy perfection. You want the edges to begin to look dry and golden brown. *Cook times will vary based on different air fryers and the size of the air fryer basket.
  • Empty tray onto a paper towel lined plate and repeat with remaining pasta mixture.
  • Air Fryer Pasta Chips will crisp up more as they cool, so you do not want to cook them until they are hard/crispy.
  • Serve your crispy pasta chips with your favorite dipping sauce. (Ranch or marinara are favorites)
  • Store leftover pasta chips in a airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Do not freeze.
