What Are Butterbeer Cupcakes?

These cupcakes inspired by the iconic butterbeer drink from the Harry Potter series. They typically feature flavors like cream soda, butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar to recreate the sweet buttery flavor fans recognize from the Wizarding World.

Most recipes include a butterscotch frosting or filling to mimic the creamy foam topping found on traditional butterbeer drinks.

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like?

It has a rich buttery flavor similar to cream soda mixed with butterscotch and caramel. Most describe it as tasting like a buttery cream soda float with hints of vanilla and brown sugar.

These cupcakes capture those same sweet flavors in dessert form!

How to Make Harry Potter Butterbeer Cupcakes

  • Preheat the oven and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. For a fun twist use liners in your favorite Harry Potter house colors!
  • The cupcake batter combines brown sugar, cream soda, buttermilk, and butter extract for a sweet buttery flavor, while a homemade butterscotch sauce adds extra decadence to both the frosting and topping.
  • Whisk together the wet and dry ingredients before gently stirring in cream soda for that classic butterbeer taste.

What Are the Three Ingredients in Butterbeer?

In the Harry Potter books, butterbeer is said to be made from butterscotch, sugar, and water. Copycat recipes often include cream soda, butterscotch syrup, whipped cream, vanilla, and butter extract to recreate the famous flavor.

Is Butterbeer Basically Butterscotch?

Butterbeer has a strong butterscotch flavor, but it also includes notes of cream soda, caramel, butter, and vanilla. While butterscotch is the dominant flavor, butterbeer tastes creamier and lighter than straight butterscotch candy.

What Kind of Alcohol Is in Butterbeer?

Traditional Harry Potter-style butterbeer is usually non-alcoholic. However, some adult versions include rum, bourbon, butterscotch schnapps, or cream liqueurs.
These cupcakes are family-friendly and contain no alcohol.

What Frosting Goes Best with Butterbeer Cupcakes?

Butterscotch buttercream is the classic choice, but cream cheese frosting or vanilla buttercream also work well.

Can I Make Butterbeer Cupcakes Ahead of Time?

Yes! Bake the cupcakes 1-2 days ahead and frost before serving for best freshness. Or freeze the unfrosted cupcakes for up to 3 months. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe container.
