Yes! Frozen blueberries work beautifully in baked desserts like blueberry crisp. They hold their flavor well and make it easy to enjoy blueberry desserts year-round without needing fresh berries in season.
No, you do not need to thaw frozen blueberries before making blueberry crisp. Adding them frozen helps prevent the berries from becoming too soft and keeps the filling from turning watery.
For blueberry crisp, it’s better to toss the berries with cornstarch instead of flour. Cornstarch thickens the juices as the blueberries bake and helps create that perfectly jammy filling.
Cinnamon is one of the best spices to pair with blueberries because it adds warmth without overpowering the fruit. A small amount of nutmeg or lemon zest also helps enhance the natural blueberry flavor.
Usually the topping. A crisp traditionally contains oats, which create a crunchy texture as it bakes, while a crumble topping is typically made without oats and has a softer, streusel-like texture.
A ceramic or glass baking dish works best because it bakes evenly and keeps the filling hot longer. An 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish is ideal for most blueberry crisp recipes.
