How to Make French Toast Casserole

  • Grease a 9×13 baking dish and fill it with torn bread pieces. Bread choices like stale or day old brioche and challah often create a richer texture because they absorb custard well while holding their shape.
  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugars, and vanilla, then pour the mixture over the bread.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight for the best flavor and texture.
  • Prepare the cinnamon crumb topping separately and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Before baking, sprinkle the topping over the casserole and bake until golden and set.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes, then serve with powdered sugar and maple syrup if desired.

Can I make French toast casserole without refrigerating overnight?

Yes, but letting it chill helps the bread absorb more flavor and creates a better texture.

Why Is My French Toast Casserole Soggy?

A soggy casserole usually comes from too much liquid, using soft bread, or underbaking. Bread with more structure holds up better after soaking overnight. If the center still looks wet after baking, give it extra time in the oven until fully set.

Can you freeze French toast casserole?

Yes! Bake completely and allow it to cool before wrapping tightly. Freeze individual portions or the entire casserole for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven for best texture.

How to reheat french toast casserole?

Reheat French toast casserole in a 350°F oven for 15–20 minutes until warmed through. Individual servings can also be microwaved for 30–60 seconds for a quick and easy breakfast.

What to Serve with Overnight French Toast Casserole

Since the casserole is sweet and rich, pairing it with savory dishes, fresh fruit, and drinks creates a balanced meal everyone will enjoy.

  • Fresh Fruit like berries, sliced bananas, melon, grapes, or a fruit salad add a light and refreshing side. The bright flavors help balance the richness of the casserole and make brunch feel extra colorful.
  • Breakfast Sausage pair perfectly with the sweet cinnamon flavors. The savory and slightly salty flavor is a great contrast.
  • Bacon is always a brunch favorite. Its smoky flavor balances the sweetness and adds a little crunch alongside the soft casserole.
  • Simple scrambled eggs make an easy protein-packed side dish and help round out the meal for a more filling breakfast.
