How to Make Peanut Butter Cake

  • Make sure your eggs, milk, and peanut butter are at room temperature. This helps the batter mix smoothly and evenly.
  • Start by mixing together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the oil, water, peanut butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla, then combine with the dry ingredients until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into a 9×13 pan and bake. Start testing your cake around the 45-minute mark. Insert a toothpick into the center—if it comes out clean or with a few crumbs, it’s ready.
  • Let the cake cool before adding the peanut butter icing.
  • Spread evenly over the cooled cake and, if desired, top with peanuts, chocolate chips, or Reese’s for a fun finish.
Can I use a different frosting?

Yes! Frostings like chocolate or cream cheese and chocolate ganache are great options.

Can you put peanut butter in cake batter?

Yes! Adding peanut butter directly to cake batter is a delicious way to infuse rich, nutty flavor and extra moisture into the cake. Smooth, shelf-stable peanut butter (like Jif) works best because it blends evenly with the wet ingredients and bakes into a tender, fluffy crumb.

    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup vegetable oil
    • 1 cup water
    • ¾ cup smooth peanut butter
    • ½ cup milk

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    • 6 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
    • 6 tablespoons water

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
    • Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
    • For best results, ensure that your butter, eggs, and milk are at room temperature. This allows for better mixing and a smoother batter.
    • Mix wet ingredients in a separate large bowl and then add the peanut butter mixture to the flour mixture.
    • Mix together.
    • Pour cake batter into the prepared 9×13 pan and bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
    • Mix together the ingredients for the peanut butter frosting.
    • Stir the powdered sugar, peanut butter, and water together until smooth. Then, spread the frosting over the top of the cake evenly.
    • Consider adding chopped peanuts, mini chocolate chips, chocolate drizzle, or Reese's peanut butter cups for an extra festive look to your homemade peanut butter cake.

    Notes

Cover the cake tightly and store it at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze slices wrapped in plastic wrap and foil for up to 2 months.
