Can you use cardstock to make paper flowers?
Yes! Its thickness and sturdiness help create beautiful, durable flowers that hold their shape well, making them perfect for decorations, scrapbooking, and even DIY gift projects.
How to Make Cardstock Flowers
Start by selecting colored craft papers and printing out a flower template.
Don’t be afraid to get creative with your flowers.
Experiment with different color combinations to create multi-layered flowers.
You can create flowers of different sizes for more dynamic arrangements. Layering smaller and larger flowers can create an eye-catching effect.
Place your template on your cardstock and trace the flower petals using a pencil. If your template has multiple layers (for layered flowers), be sure to trace all the pieces you need.
After tracing, carefully cut out the petals.
For a sunflower, crease 4 petals from tip to center and join 2 together.
You can make your flower as full or as sparse as you like by adjusting the number of petals.
Once you’ve stacked all the petals, add a flower center.
This can be a small round cutout, a button, a bead, or a pom-pom.
Secure it in the center of the flower using a dab of glue.
Fold 2 more petals unevenly, attach an oval cutout in the center, and then assemble the flowers on a craft base.
Add leaf cutouts between the flowers, cover the bottom with a contrasting paper, and attach a vase cutout to complete the design.
Allow your DIY Cardstock Flowers to dry fully before using it in your project.
The best cardstock for flowers is typically a medium-weight cardstock (around 65-80 lb). This weight provides the right balance between flexibility for shaping and stiffness to maintain the flower’s structure. For vibrant colors, look for colored or textured cardstock that complements your flower design.
The number of cardstock sheets you need depends on the size and type of flowers you’re making. For a standard-sized flower, one sheet of cardstock might be enough for multiple flowers. If you’re making larger blooms or multiple varieties, you may need 2-3 sheets to ensure you have enough material for petals, centers, and leaves.
