Do You Put Cream Cheese in Boat Dip?

Traditionally, no it’s usually made with sour cream instead of cream cheese, giving it a lighter, scoopable texture that’s perfect for chips. However, many people like to mix in softened cream cheese for an even thicker, richer dip. If using cream cheese, allow it to soften completely before mixing so the dip stays smooth.

Do You Drain the Rotel for Boat Dip?

Yes. Draining the Rotel helps keep the dip thick and creamy instead of watery. Simply pour off the excess liquid before stirring the tomatoes and green chiles into the dip.

Can I Make Boat Dip Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! In fact, it tastes even better after chilling for several hours because the taco seasoning has time to fully flavor the sour cream. Prepare it up to 24 hours ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
