How to Make Sweet Potato Dog Treats

Ingredients

Directions

Use ingredients that are room temperature.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat and preheat the oven 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, eggs, sweet potato, peanut butter and salt.

Add a little water as needed to get the dough to knead until a dough forms. But not too wet, as you want your dough to be dry and stiff.

We recently started changing our homemade dog treats to swap out water for beef or chicken bone broth for added flavor and nutrients.

Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch-thick using a rolling pin on a floured surface and cut them out with your cookie cutter.

Bake for about 40 minutes until they are hard! These are a crunchy biscuit, not a chewy dog treat.

Then let your very own treats cool on a wire rack on a stable surface

After the treats have cooled off, keep them in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks. If you’d like to freeze them, homemade dog treats last about 6 months in a freezer safe container.

Tips and Tricks for Making Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats

  • Choose the right sweet potatoes. Opt for fresh, firm sweet potatoes without any signs of spoilage. Select organic sweet potatoes whenever possible to avoid potential pesticides.
  • Bake or boil the sweet potatoes until they are soft and tender. This will make them easier to mash and incorporate into the dough.
  • When adding peanut butter to the recipe, make sure to choose a natural variety that does not contain any added sugars or artificial sweeteners. Look for peanut butter that is free from xylitol, as it can be toxic to dogs.
  • The dough should be firm enough to roll and cut into shapes but not too dry. If the dough feels too sticky, you can add a little bit of flour or oat flour to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Experiment with different shapes and sizes. Get creative with the shapes of your dog treats. You can use cookie cutters or simply shape the dough into small balls or bone shapes. Remember to adjust the baking time accordingly for different sizes.
  • Allow the treats to cool completely: After baking, let the treats cool completely before serving them to your furry friend. This helps them firm up and ensures a more enjoyable texture for your dog.

Sweet Potato Dog Biscuits Variations

If you’re looking for alternatives to sweet potato in your homemade dog biscuits, there are several options you can consider:

  • Pumpkin is a nutritious and dog-friendly ingredient that can be used as a substitute for sweet potato. It has a similar texture and sweetness, making it a great alternative.
  • Carrots are another vegetable that dogs enjoy, and they can add a natural sweetness to your dog biscuits. Grate or puree the carrots before incorporating them into the recipe.
  • Unsweetened applesauce can be used as a substitute for sweet potato. It adds moisture and natural sweetness to the biscuits. Just make sure the applesauce does not contain any added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
  • Mashed ripe bananas can provide a natural sweetness to your dog biscuits. They also add moisture and a pleasant flavor that many dogs love.
  • Similar to sweet potatoes, butternut squash is an excellent alternative for dog treats. Roast or steam the squash and mash it before incorporating it into your recipe.

Momma Lew, Sam says-“WOOF” as I’m sure you know that means thanks for sharing your delicious recipe for the treats Chris has made for me twice now. They are yummy! 1st time made in a log that was sliced and baked, thanks to the follower who made that suggestion. 2nd time used the inside piece only from a donut cutter. Wound up with 78 mini treats. Both ways were equally easy. Sam, a 95 lb. GSD, got so excited for them 1st time had to make again. Thanks again for your ridiculously easy and making my puppy happy treats! You Rock!

Great recipe, my dog loves, loves, loves these treats. Only thing I did different, I ground oatmeal into flour and used 1/3 oat flour and AP flour, (I ran out of AP). Now all my friends are asking me to make them for their dogs. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us.
