Tips for Giving Your Baby a Bath
Thank you to Summer Infant for kindly sponsoring this post. All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.
I’ll never forget the first time I had to give my new baby his first bath. It seemed so simple. Yet, once I tried to put it all into practice, I felt like I didn’t have enough hands! After a few months though, we were pros at bathing our baby!
Get everything ready by the bath tub.
There is nothing worse than realizing you forgot a towel or the baby wash. Babies are so finicky as it is and any extra time you spend with them undressed, cold or wet can lead to a melt down. Line everything up and keep them all at an arms length from you.
You will need:
Towels (I recommend a regular bath towel. I had larger sized newborns and baby towels never fit around them.)
Baby soap & shampoo
A small cup to pour baby over your baby (not on the head or their eyes though)
Depending on your baby’s age, you may want to keep a few bath toys near by to keep them happy and engaged.
Once you got everything ready, it’s time to get the bath ready.
Water that may be comfortable for you, will not be the same temperature for your baby. In order to ensure the water is the proper temperature, test your elbow in the water. If it feels too warm, add some cold water to cool the water down.
Now it’s time to bathe your baby!
First of all, relax! This is a special and relaxing time for you and your baby. Enjoy it! Lower your baby into the tub legs first and then slowly lay him down into the water.
Wash your baby’s face with the wash cloth and clean water, first.
Then, move on to the rest of the baby’s body with a little bit of the gentle baby soap. Don’t forget about those little areas where milk, sweat or dirt may build up: in between toes & fingers, arm pits and behind the ears.
Once you are all done, lay your baby onto the towel and swaddle them up to dry them off. Once they are all dried up, get them diapered and dressed and enjoy that freshly bathed baby smell!
One of my favorite products that I can’t help but recommend to new parents or give as a baby shower gift is the Summer Infant My Bath Seat™.
I love being able to have two free hands for bathing and the ease of bathing with 360 degree support around the baby! You should NEVER leave baby unattended and ALWAYS keep baby within your reach.
