The Best Homemade Hummus Recipe

The Best Homemade Hummus Recipe

Sharing is caring!

This homemade hummus recipe is creamy and smooth and full of flavor thanks to roasted garlic!

We’ve been in a snack rut lately. I have simply just run out of ideas to add to my kids’ lunches and snacks. The thing is, they are growing fast! And they seem to ALWAYS be hungry! So many snacks just have empty calories and don’t do anything to really quench their hunger!

I started buying hummus regularly for myself and I was shocked that my kids kept stealing MY snacks! Hummus ended up being the perfect addition to their snacks!

We serve it with sliced cucumbers, peppers and pita wedges. We decided to make our own and were shocked how easy and delicious it was!

It’s funny because none of us can stand the taste of chick peas, but in our hummus, yes please!

It’s amazing how many different variations of hummus you can find now. So if you find yourself feeling adventurous:

Try this hatch chili spicy hummus, add in some pumpkin for a pumpkin spice hummus, beets add a beautiful color and a delicious taste to hummus or add in some sweet ingredients for a dessert hummus!

What you need to make this the Best Homemade Hummus Recipe:

Chickpeas – I stock up on chick peas while they are on sale. Hummus is a great dip to make for parties, holidays and get togethers so I like to have them on hand!

Tahini – I have tried to make hummus without the Tahini and I will be honest with you, it’s just blah. Tahini is sesame paste. A little goes a long way so buy a high-quality tahini that will last you awhile.

Garlic – I love to use roasted garlic! It adds such an amazing depth of flavor!

To roast the garlic:

Cut the top off of the garlic head and drizzle with a small amount of olive oil.

Wrap in aluminum foil and place in a 400 degree oven for 40 minutes.

Remove from oven and set aside to cool for a few minutes.

To save time, roast the garlic in advance while preparing other roasted vegetables or dishes in the oven. Roasted garlic can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container covered in olive oil for up to one week.

How to Make the Hummus:

In a food processor or blender, pulse together olive oil, chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, water. Once cool, remove roasted garlic cloves from outer skin and add to the container.

Season with sea salt, to taste, and blend your hummus until smooth. You will need to stop the blender at least once to scrape the sides down.

Add more water, if necessary, to achieve desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasonings, as desired.

Transfer to a serving dish and drizzle with high-quality extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of smoked paprika.

Serve your homemade hummus immediately with fresh vegetables and Kalamata olives. Enjoy!

Yes, this whole process will take less than 5 minutes.
