Important Safety Swimming Tips For New Beginners
You do want to have some safety tips in place for new swimmers and these five are big ones to remember when have beginner swimmers!
Stay Out Of the Water If You’re Tired – Of course we know our kids can be exhausted after a long day at school or activities that they had before they got to swimming. If you are super tired they won’t be as active to try and float, or swim which could be potentially dangerous when they begin swimming. Another reason to stay out of the water if they are extremely cold or if they are overheated. These reasons can also be dangerous for them to drown if they are too weak to swim. As a swimmer as a young child myself, I would get extremely cold when I was in the water and remember my muscles and entire body shaking while attempting to listen to my coach. It certainly makes it difficult to concentrate let along swim.
Always Swim With A Buddy – For those kids who have never swam before, of course you want to have a buddy or a trust adult nearby to help them become used to the water. Some kids are excited and jump right in while other kids scream and just hold onto their parents for dear life. Having an adult help their child become comfortable by role modeling that the water is fun and used to keep us strong is important. The swim instructors always start with small steps to keep your little one engaged and excited to learn more about the water by putting their face in, blowing bubbles and learning to kick.
Never Chew Gum or Eat While Swimming – There’s a reason why the only thing you bring into the water is yourself, goggles if you need it and that’s it! There have been several times where kids are at large water parks or pools, eating lunch or a snack and then hear the whistle blow to let them back in the water and they choke on their way to swim or jump into the pool. It takes only a few minutes to finish chewing your food and then enter the water, or spit out your gum into a napkin or trash can. These tips are vital to helping new swimmers learn to just bring themselves into a pool while swimming.
Be Comfortable – This means a variety of things to new swimmers, the first being that you want to be comfortable in the water no matter the depth. Some swimmers want to immediately go into the deep end but if you can’t see the bottom of the pool, that’s dangerous for a new swimmer if you’re not comfortable touching the bottom to get back up! Don’t become discouraged either- as a new swimmer it might take a little bit for you to become comfortable with the water temperature or just learning to float but you’ll get there eventually!
