My sweet Chester just turned 13 years old last month. He was born on my wedding night on a farm that belonged to a coworker of my husband’s. While he is still so young at heart, he has moments that really show his age.
We are hoping, with some tender love and care, we can really savor the senior years with our Chester.
How to Care for Your Senior Dog
Keep him exercised.
Just because your dog is older, doesn’t mean you have to count him out of the game! Regular walks keep joints and muscles working. Smelling the neighborhood keeps their mind active too!
Plan walks accordingly.
This past winter, we noticed the brutal cold really got to our dog’s joints. Likewise, this summer we are noticing he pants a lot more and requires a lot more water in the heat.
Give him some extra attention.
My dog seems to need a lot more love these days. He seems to always be by my side, asking for a belly rub or a pat on the head. As they get older, you may notice that your pet is starting to get a little senile. Chester seems to forget he eats a lot.
Brush those teeth!
I only wish that I had started the habit of brushing my dog’s teeth when he was a puppy. He refuses to let me, so we have the vet take care of his teeth at his annual visit.
