For as long as I can remember, our Thanksgiving morning started with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. If you watch to the end, you know just after Santa Claus arrives into NYC, the National Dog Show Presented by Purina begins!
We always watched, waiting for our favorite breed to come on: Old English Sheepdog. Then we brought a Bichon Frise home and more recently, our 3rd Australian Cattle Dog, so of course we watch for those!
Naturally, when Purina invited me to a behind the scenes look at this year’s National Dog Show, I jumped on the chance!
Behind The Scenes at the National Dog Show Presented by Purina
First of all, let’s just say it takes a lot of work to look this good! These dogs get washed, cut, combed, brushed and more to get ready to strut their stuff for the judges. First, each dog competes to be the best in breed and once one dog wins that title, then he or she will move on to compete in best in group, which is what viewers at home will see on Thanksgiving Day. There are seven groups total including Toy, Herding, Sporting, Non-sporting, Hound, Working and Terrier.
While the dogs are prepping, there are aisles and aisles of every dog breed, handlers, groomers and dog owners. Everyone is so excited to share everything they can about their special dog.
Any dog owner can tell you that their pet is truly one of the best friend’s they can ever have. I always said I wish they could talk to tell me what’s on their mind. My dogs over the years have been there for us in the good and bad times. In fact, when my 14-year-old cattle dog, Chester, passed away this past February; it’s the reason we brought home our Ozzy in March. We just missed that companionship.
Purina’s #DogThanking Campaign
Every Thanksgiving we gather around our tables and give thanks, but do we ever give thanks to our beloved pets? In celebration of Thanksgiving and this year’s National Dog Show, Purina is inviting pet owners to recognize the countless roles our dogs play in our lives such as the listener, the work partner, the hero and the supporter.
Purina is encouraging pet lovers to share a photo or video of their pet on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram that highlights their courageous and honor-worthy role in the family. Use #DogThanking and tag Purina when you post, and your pet could be featured during the airing of the National Dog Show Presented by Purina on NBC or NationalDogShow.com.
The #DogThanking program highlights the countless roles our pets play in our lives. Like through Purina’s Purple Leash Project initiative that is striving to make domestic violence shelters more pet-friendly across the country because pets play a crucial role as healers when survivors are starting a new chapter in their life.
