I remember the first time I flew with my son. I had a moment of insanity and decided I was going to join my husband on his military duty in Hawaii. With our 10 month old. Yes, I decided that flying across the country and then some with 2 layovers and an infant was a great idea.
While it all turned out to be great, I look back on that and can’t help but wonder what was I thinking? Airports and traveling seem to overwhelm the best of us, but then add in a kid or 2 and all the “baggage” literally & figuratively that goes with them, you could really be questioning your decisions. But, have no fear. I promise it’s not nearly as difficult as you are envisioning it to be.
First and foremost, stay calm! I promise you can do this and the memories will be so worth it!
Fly out on the first flight of the day. I always do this, with or without kids. It makes the chances of delays much less.
Use a lightweight umbrella stroller. Between carry on bags and other essentials, I couldn’t imagine adding an infant or toddler to the mix of things I needed to carry. Bring the stroller right up to the gate and check it there. So when you deplane, it’s waiting for you.
Pack your carry on bag smartly. Pack a carry on bag with a change of clothes for you and the kids. I learned this one first hand on that very first flight. If your kids are in diapers, pack 1 diaper per hour, and a few snacks. Always bring wipes no matter their age.
Speaking of clothes, dress the kids in layers and comfortable clothing. I love slip on shoes or sneakers to help them (and you) get through security a little easier. PJs are totally acceptable attire.
Download some movies or TV shows on your iPad or phone. Bring your child’s own headphones.
Once your child becomes mobile and is still under 2 years old, think about purchasing their own seat. No one wants to spend the day being their child’s own personal trampoline.
Fly a kid-friendly airline, like Frontier. Purchasing that seat for your child won’t break the bank on Frontier thanks to their Kids Fly Free program through their Discount Den travel club!
