I have always been the kind of mom who loves to throw a birthday party for the kids. It’s just always been my thing. Sadly, my days of themed birthdays and parties are over for my son. He told me this year, he just wanted to have cake with his family and a few friends.
I was so out of my element! For the last 9 years I have spent this time of the year party planning! It’s OK though, I am embracing this new tween life and letting my son guide me on how he wants to celebrate his birthdays from here on out!
6 Ways to Throw an Awesome Tween Birthday Party

Set a theme
Just because we aren’t having a big party, doesn’t mean we can’t have a theme. Adam asked for something simple. He picked out a bright blue and neon green theme. Some things you’ll need:
I’m learning quickly that I need to consult my tween with decision making. He and I definitely do not see eye to eye when it comes to needs and wants.
Keep it small
While Adam didn’t want a “party”, he was thrilled when I told him to invite over a few close friends to celebrate his big day with him.
Let them be
The best part of this age is that we no longer need to hover over the kids (sorry — tweens) monitoring their every move. Let the kids enjoy the party! Give them some ideas of things to do, like:
- A Pinata
- Create a photo booth
- Glow in the Dark party
- Color War
- Nerf War
Keep it simple
There’s no need for elaborate food and drink choices. We decided to do a few finger foods like chips and pretzels and, the best part, cake.
Here are some of our favorite kid-friendly drink ideas that will be a hit for the party:
Pick up the cake they ask for
Speaking of cake, I have found that when it comes to anyone’s birthday, they are pretty particular about the kind of cake they want to celebrate their big day with. My son asked for an ice cream cake, which can take a lot of time and effort to make homemade. So what did I do? On my weekly grocery store run, I picked up my go to ice cream cake: original Carvel® Ice Cream Cake from I Love Ice Cream Cakes.
Available in many different sizes and styles, I Love Ice Cream Cakes has a cake for any occasion from birthdays to celebrating a job well done and just because. You can find them conveniently in grocery stores nationwide in the bakery or freezer section. The bakery department at my local ShopRite even wrote my son’s name on the cake for me!
My family loves the classic Carvel Round Ice Cream Cake with Confetti! My favorite part is the fresh whipped icing. My son’s is the chocolate crunchies and my daughter’s is the ice cream.
