5 Ways to Help Your Child Sleep During the Holidays

Between the traveling, excitement, guests and entertaining, the holiday season can wreck havoc on your children’s sleep. As a mom of two children, I know first hand that when they don’t sleep well, I don’t sleep well.
Get that nap in
It can take months to get a new routine down, but only days to wreck it. Don’t sacrifice your child’s nap because you are visiting family, at an unfamiliar home or it cuts into meal times. Bring a pack-in-play or your child’s stroller and head into a quiet bedroom or take a walk outside. If you are like me, you will appreciate the time away for a few minutes. Even just a few minutes of quiet time in a room with dimmed lights and away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays can recharge your children (and you!).
The Baby Sleep Site recommends “if you have to choose between a missed morning nap or missed afternoon nap, opt for a missed afternoon nap PLUS an early bedtime (if possible). The morning nap usually sets the mood for the rest of the day. An overtired baby in the morning typically plagues you the rest of the day and night.”
Trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar place
My kids have a lot of trouble sleeping at grandma’s, their aunt and uncles house or really any place unfamiliar. I try to pack a little something from home, usually their pillow pets to give them something familiar. I also like to pack a night light as well. At the same time, be sure not to revert back to old habits. If you spent months weaning your child, don’t breastfeed because it will be easier, don’t put a diaper back on if you are in the middle of potty training and don’t give a pacifier if you weaned from that.
Stop them from getting overtired
Watch your children and get them into bed before they hit a point of being overtired. How do I know when this happens? My son gets very giddy. While it’s funny, I know once he gets the giggles, he should have been asleep an hour ago. When kids go to bed overtired, they are more likely to wake up throughout the night, have nightmares and wake up at the crack of dawn no matter how late they went to bed.
My daughter has always been adverse to sleeping in the car. But her brother falls asleep pretty quickly after getting into his seat. The Baby Sleep Site suggests “not treating this like a nap [if they fall asleep on the way home]. Her body will still expect to sleep, so do a mini bedtime routine and put her to bed. Try to keep it dark while you are doing this, so she doesn’t wake all the way up.”
Know what you can and cannot do
When I first became a mom, I would drag the kids out for 7 o’clock dinners and shortly after I would get there, I’d regret the decision. What was I thinking dragging the kids out so close to bedtime?! While it does get exhausting to tell people that it is so close to bedtime and you can’t make it, family members and friends who really want to see you and your family will understand and see you at lunch or an early dinner instead.
