How I Live Prepared
The last week of October 2012, a major hurricane formed and was named Sandy. Living in New Jersey, we never really worry about these types of things. When the news started forecasting that it will make landfall smack into New Jersey, most of us didn’t take it very seriously. I remember standing in line at Sam’s Club just to buy a rotisserie chicken wondering why in the world people were in such a panic for water and batteries.
We started to realize this wasn’t much of a joke and we did the best we could to prepare last minute with a few “snow day” type of foods like water, milk and bread. I couldn’t find any batteries and since we never lost power here and were about 45 minutes from the shore, I figured it was no big deal. I didn’t fill up my gas tank even though it was on empty because I figured where would I have to drive?!
The storm hit and everything that they said would happen, happened and more. To this day, almost 4 years later, we still talk about it like it was yesterday and my children still are frightening of strong winds and rain. We were without power for 4 days (short compared to most), my car remained on E for a few days because of a gas shortage. Waking up the day after the storm to this reality was frightening. Being how we have electric appliances, we couldn’t cook anything. The temperatures freakishly dropped and it was very cold at night. We ran out of batteries, thank goodness for neighbors.
Needless to say, since that day when they say to prepare. I LIVE PREPARED.
Since those days of Hurricane Sandy, I live to make sure that we are always ready for anything especially with natural disasters becoming much more commonplace. Being ready can be pretty stressful! In a nationwide consumer survey, Live Prepared found 75 percent of people agreed that emergency preparedness became a bigger concern when they became parents, yet 50 percent of parents do not even know where to start. Many think about taking action to do something to prepare, however they most-often do not. Thanks to Live Prepared, with the push of a couple of buttons, you can organize yourself and get prepared.
Live Prepared’s 72-Hour Emergency Home Kits have everything you and your family will need in an emergency and the clean-up afterwards. If you have young children, emergency preparedness ensures they’ll be as comfortable, well-fed and safe as possible. While I hope our family never needs to use our emergency kit, I love the peace of mind and security it brings knowing it is ready to go when needed.
So what’s in your Live Prepared kit?
- Complete Cooking Kit – I wondered after looking at the food and it said add hot water how we were going to do this. BUT, the cooking kit has everything you need to heat food.
- How will you get water in an emergency? Use the included Advanced Water Filtration Bottle.
- 50-hour candles
- 8-in-1 flashlight
- Emergency Ponchos
- Emergency Blankets
- One of my favorite items is the solar powered charger, radio and flashlight.
- Playing Cards to keep you occupied
- A 53 piece first aid kit (which I have to say I often am found without)
- Personal Hygiene Kit
- 11 pouches of food including: granola, oatmeal, pasta alfredo, cheesy broccoli and rice, creamy chicken and rice, stroganoff and noodles, mac & cheese, banana chips and orange drink.
You will find the food in the kit to be high-quality with the calories and nutrition needed to keep you going in case of an emergency. It’s easy to prepare with the hot water you will get from your cooking kit and it’s shelf stable for 20 years. Think about that. With canned goods, you will need to not only spend money to replace and purchase new goods, but you will have to worry if your food is safe to eat in the event of a disaster. The shelf life of canned goods is only 2-3 years. The shelf-stable foods are cooked right in the pouch with hot water.
When Hurricane Sandy hit, we took my husband’s military MRE’s out and I said I rather go hungry then eat that. Of course, we took out the Live Prepared food to try it out and it was really very good! I ate the oatmeal for breakfast one morning.
And when you are in an emergency situation you need to be prepared and ready to go at a moment’s notice, so the Live Prepared emergency kit comes with this Heavy Duty backpack that everything fits in.
One lucky reader will get their family to live prepared with a giveaway prize valued at $400 or higher (the winner’s kit will be customized to your family with extra food and supplies if you have a family of over 4).
