This is our favorite time of the year. Farm stands are opening up and where we live in New Jersey, pick your own farms are a fun day out.
6 Reasons to Take Your Kids to a Pick Your Own Farm
When you pick fruit right at it’s growing location, there is no time spent transporting the produce. It is fresher and therefore, healthier for your family since over time nutrients are lost!
There is nothing better than being able to talk to your farmer! Ask them questions about their farming practices and even see how you and your kids can get involved!
By picking your own produce at a local farm, your family is helping that farmer’s small business. Your children will see first hand how the money you spend there will be invested back into the farm and the farmer’s family.
It’s a learning lesson for sure! Most farms have animals, sand boxes, story times, playgrounds and more that help your children with their sensory skills, problem solving thinking and fine motor skills.
Nowadays it seems that our children are forever asking to be on an electronic device of some sort (and that goes for mom and dad too). Getting outside to pick your own fruits and vegetables will help your family reconnect with nature and relax in the great outdoors.
Picking your own gets your kids hands on with their food. Picking fresh fruits and vegetables will give them a vested interest in foods they may not have otherwise eaten. Give your children a challenge to pick a fruit or vegetable they may have never tried. Think about new recipes or ways you can enjoy their bounties! Some of our favorite things to make our breads & muffins, jams and sauces.
