How to Grow Your Pinterest Account
For a lot of bloggers and small business owners, Pinterest seems to be an enigma. If you use it right, you will find that it will be one of your top referrers, right up there with Google and Facebook.
So here are some of my top tips on how to grow your Pinterest following.
- SEO (search engine optimize) your Pinterest account. From your “about me” to your board descriptions to each individual pin. You want your descriptions to be keyword rich and short and concise. Never “key word stuff”.
- Be sure to actually have a description for each pin! Countless times I will repin something from a website and find that the pin’s description is something like “dsc001” or valentines_day_cake. When you add images to your blog post, be sure to filling in your Alt Text with keyword rich descriptions! So for example, instead of valentine’s day cake, use something like Red Velvet Cake perfect for Valentine’s Day – Momma Lew. You can read more of my SEO tips here.
- Ditch the hashtags! Yes, if you do sponsored posts, many times this is a requirement of the campaign. Hashtags are only clickable in your pin’s description, so they are completely useless in your about me or board descriptions. Also, Pinterest’s search does not support hashtags.
- Be sure to set up your boards to make them appealing to your readers. Make sure that you have a board set up solely for your website and make that the main attraction, the first one! The first 3-5 boards are your prime real estate of topics you want to highlight to potential readers. Keep seasonal boards there and swap when the season is over (ie: Christmas, Back to School, Summer, etc.). After that, keep your boards in alphabetical order.
- NEVER delete pins, ever. Whereas on Facebook and Twitter, the lifespan of a post is only around 90 minutes, pins on Pinterest can stay relevant for more than a week. You never know when your pin will take off. With that said, if you find that your pin is not doing well, go back and update your images. Many of us have improved over the years in terms of photography and have a better understanding of what makes a photo stand on our blogs. Go back and update descriptions and optimize them.
- Be sure that your images are Pinterest friendly! Meaning, images should be vertical and about 735 x 1185 pixels. Keep in mind that your words on your photo are often times what will hook your readers into clicking onto your photo. With the majority of your readers using their mobile devices as their means to go on the internet, keep your fonts readable. Often times, script fonts are very hard to read.
- You need to be pinning consistently. And pinning high quality images. Stick to a range of 10-30 pins a day.
- That might seem overwhelming. A pin scheduling program like Tailwind will take a lot of that stress away. What I have found to be most effective in using Tailwind is to first pin your image from your website to your blog’s board on Pinterest. From there, schedule it out to any board that is relevant. Including group boards or boards like “my favorite bloggers”. I really like using Tailwind because I can set up an “interval” setting so that I am not flooding my readers with the same pin. I set the pin to go to the different boards at different times or days.
- Pinterest rewards pins that have high traffic. Go through your analytics on both Google and in Pinterest to find out what your top pins are and what your top posts are. These should all be optimized and constantly being scheduled through Tailwind.
- Work with other bloggers that you know and trust to be high quality to do daily repinning of each other’s posts. When you offer content from others your readers start to see you as an expert in your field, in turn you build their trust and readership.
- Reciprocate to your followers. Pinterest likes an equal balance of followers vs. following. Go through your followers and follow back accounts that can offer evergreen content for you.
- I come across countless websites a day that do not have a pin it button! Be sure your website has a “Pin It Button” to make it easy for your readers to share your content. It’s as simple as adding a plug in to your wordpress blog.
- Embed your Pinterest board’s widgets into blog content.
