I remember the first time my doctor and I spoke about the possibility of my husband and I starting to try to conceive. I had no idea of all of the things I should start doing to make sure my body was in fact ready to grow and nurture a healthy new human being.
Here are 5 Things to do Before You Try to Conceive (TTC):
♥ Both mom & dad-to-be should get a complete physical from a physician. Going over your health histories is important to note any future red flags and to ensure a healthy pregnancy. You will also want to make sure both of your vaccines are up to date. This also includes seeing a dentist! Gum disease is often a cause of pre-term delivery. You will also want to be sure any dental work is completed since you cannot receive x-rays or some medications once you do conceive.
♥ Start planning to get off of your birth control. If you are using a barrier method of contraception, this does not apply. But, birth control pills can linger in your system and inhibit your ovulation for several months after you stop taking them. Once your period has become consistent, start charting the date and figure out when you are ovulating.
♥ If you are a smoker, you will want to kick your habit a few months before you start to TTC. If your partner is a smoker, have him work on quitting as well to quell the chances your baby will be exposed to second-hand smoke. Depending on your alcohol consumption, stop binge drinking.
♥ Take care of your weight. Being overweight can cause gestational diabetes or high blood pressure during pregnancy and can cause complications.
♥ Eat a better diet. Your body and baby will need a ton of folic acid, zinc and additional vitamins and minerals to grow and reduce the risks of birth defects. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains and start cutting out unhealthy, processed foods.
♥ Start taking a pre-natal vitamin.
Best of luck in your TTC journey!
