Seven years ago this month I became a mom for the first time. As most parents do when they find out they are expecting, we did a lot of research. We read books, went to classes, found articles for advice. As expecting parents, it is ingrained in our minds no pillows, no blankets, have your child sleep on their back and so on. I accepted that because the truth is, why wouldn’t I?
I remember the day we found out we were having a baby boy, we ran to our local big box baby store and started our registry. I’ll be quite honest, I remember being completely overwhelmed in the store and really just picking out items based on price and classic brand names that I had been familiar with. One of the items we picked out that day was a crib mattress. It was firm and a well known brand, so why not?
As my children grew, I found myself increasingly more aware of the world around me. Things that I had never even thought of before became eye opening. Things like allergies to food dyes, using mama cloth, breastfeeding, cloth diapers, and baby wearing are just a few things that I feel I would do completely differently if I were to be so lucky to have a third baby.
Now that my children are 7 and almost 5, they have grown to a point where they have outgrown their toddler beds (and crib mattresses). I’m not as overwhelmed as that mom-to-be was 7 years ago and this time around I did all of the research I could. What I found was startling and eye opening.
Why Your Child Should Be Sleeping on a Non Toxic Mattress
As a parent, we live with our hearts on the outside of our chests daily. We live with constant worry that something will happen to our children. After more than five decades, parents still have no answer why or how the leading cause of death in children under 6 months happens — SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Living in a world where answers have become readily available after a quick internet search, it is so hard to believe that we must accept the unknown.
Have you ever thought about what your children (and yourself) were sleeping on?
A New Zealand scientist and chemist, Dr. James Sprott has proposed that SITS is caused by your baby’s mattress. After I read this, I shocked.
“…crib death is caused by toxic gases, which can be generated from a baby’s mattress…chemical compounds containing phosphorus, arsenic and antimony have been added to mattresses as fire retardants and for other purposes since the early 1950’s. A fungus that commonly grows in bedding can interact with these chemicals to create poisonous gases (Richardson 1994). These heavier-than-air gases are concentrated in a thin layer on the baby’s mattress or are diffused away and dissipated into the surrounding atmosphere. If a baby breathes or absorbs a lethal dose of the gases, the central nervous system shuts down, stopping breathing and then heart function. These gases can fatally poison a baby, without waking the sleeping baby and without any struggle by the baby. A normal autopsy would not reveal any sign that the baby was poisoned (Sprott 1996).”
Think about that for a second. The moment I heard this, I couldn’t find any logical reasoning to think it untrue.
For over 20 years, New Zealand has embarked on a crib death prevention campaign.
Midwives and other healthcare professionals throughout New Zealand have been actively advising parents to wrap mattresses. During this time, there has not been a single SIDS death reported among the over 200,000 New Zealand babies who have slept on mattresses wrapped in a specially formulated polyethylene cover.
What you need to know about the Toxicity in your mattress:
- The common filling in your baby’s mattress is Polyurethane foam, made of petroleum and is highly flammable. Polyurethane foam can contain chemical additives like formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and other toxins.
- Because of the nature of babies, their crib mattresses are waterproof and therefore made of a vinyl cover, which is known to be one of the most toxic of plastics and a known human carcinogen.
- Now, think about those two ingredients, two highly flammable ingredients. The U.S. government requires mattresses to be fire retardant. So, the only way to do so is by adding more chemicals like Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
It is actually legal here in the United States to NOT be transparent about the specific chemicals used to meet flammability regulations.
For many parents, including myself, their solution is to purchase an organic mattress. First and foremost, the springs and plastics used on an “organic” mattress can not be organic since they are man made. Then there is the problem of pesticide and fertilizer use, which stays in the cotton used to fill the mattress. So, while you may think Organic is the way to go, it isn’t the answer.
As parents we are always striving to do the best for our children and we cannot do the best until we feel we have exhausted all of our options to find out all of the information we need. After knowing what I now knew about the toxins in our mattresses, I couldn’t imagine my kids sleeping on anything other than an IntelliBed mattress.
The IntelliBed offers a pressure-relieving surface (more than any other crib mattress), which will help your child sleep longer and better.
Their hospital-tested Intell-Gel is made out of baby oil, there are steel springs and an organic cotton cover, making the IntellBed hypoallergenic, anti-microbial and non-toxic, making it the safest mattress for your baby or child.
Our thoughts on the IntelliBed:
My son has been enjoying his IntelliBed mattress for about a month now. IntelliBed recommends giving your body about 30 days to adjust to it’s new mattress. My son had never been a sound sleeper and I was nervous for him to use the top bunk of our new bunk beds we bought. I am convinced the IntelliBed is the answer as to why he sleeps sounder and falls asleep quicker. Quite frankly, I would love my own IntelliBed mattress. Had I know all I do now after researching non-toxic mattresses, I would have chosen an IntelliBed mattress years ago.
Hindsight is 20/20 though and all we can do is educate ourselves and move on based on the information we have at hand.
I would love to see your family sleeping sounder AND safer at night with a non-toxic IntelliBed mattress.
