Date Night: The Bandstand at the Paper Mill Playhouse
This is a sponsored post on behalf of the Paper Mill Playhouse for Blog Meets Brand. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in anyway.
After living in New Jersey for more than 20 years, I finally had the chance to see a performance at the iconic Paper Mill Playhouse.
As parents, my husband and I very rarely have the chance to go out on dates or even spend more than an hour together at home! (I miss those days!)
We decided to take advantage of an odd Sunday when my husband had off and enjoy the new show The Bandstand at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Staying in New Jersey allowed us to save a good three hours or more thanks to no need to hop on mass transit into New York.
Located in beautiful Millburn, NJ, the “Broadway in your Backyard” theater is kicking off it’s 2015-2016 season with The Bandstand which features big-band swing music and a beautiful written story. The Paper Mill Playhouse has been entertaining audiences since 1938 and is a not-for-profit organization.
I am a big fan of musical theater and The Bandstand did not disappoint. Something I found very different from other “Broadway musicals” was how the music was apart of the theatrics in the play.
The Bandstand is a love story. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but the premise is based on the lead Donny’s dream of seeing his swing band of World War II veterans reach the top. Besides the musicians, Donny adds his deceased pal’s widow to sing in the band, Julia. Donny and Julia fall in love but it’s a hard relationship because of their past with Julia’s husband. The finale sees the band competing in a national radio contest that could potentially give the band instant stardom.
The show is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler. While this was the world premier of the show, the actors all complimented each other very well and they had a wonderful relationship on stage. My husband is honestly not a fan like I am of musical theater, however he thoroughly enjoyed the relateable story line of The Bandstand.
The Bandstand is playing through November 9th at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. There are some wonderful shows coming afterwards at the Paper Mill Playhouse in case you don’t get a chance to see The Bandstand, be sure to check out A Christmas Story, A Bronx Tale or West Side Story.
