The first step is to dice up the raw chicken into bite size pieces.

In a large skillet, brown the chicken pieces over medium-high heat over a few tbsp oil or sesame oil in a single layer.

While the chicken is cooking, make your easy peanut sauce in a large bowl, whisk together the peanut sauce ingredients: soy sauce, creamy peanut butter, brown sugar, olive oil, ground ginger and white vinegar.

Tips For Making Chicken and Peanut Butter Sauce

  • Opt for natural peanut butter without added sugars or oils. It provides a rich and authentic peanut flavor to the dish.
  • Peanut butter chicken is best when the chicken is tender and juicy. Avoid overcooking to prevent dryness. Cook the chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • If the peanut butter sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with a bit of chicken broth or water. If it’s too thin, simmer the sauce for a few more minutes to reduce and thicken it.
  • Add some heat to your peanut butter chicken by incorporating chili flakes, sriracha sauce, or minced jalapeños.
  • Before serving, sprinkle some freshly chopped cilantro or green onions over the dish. These herbs add a burst of freshness and a pop of color to your peanut butter chicken.

  • Instead of peanut chicken, you can use tofu, shrimp, or beef as the main protein in your peanut butter dish. Adjust the cooking time accordingly to ensure the protein is cooked through.
  • Feel free to experiment with different sweeteners in the recipe. Instead of honey or brown sugar, you can use maple syrup, agave nectar, or even a bit of stevia for a lower-sugar option.

Can I make peanut butter chicken ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the marinade and marinate the chicken in advance to save time. You can also cook the chicken and store it in the refrigerator for a day or two in an airtight container. When ready to serve, reheat the chicken in a pan or oven and add the peanut sauce before serving.

Can I freeze peanut butter chicken?

While it’s possible to freeze peanut butter chicken, it’s best to freeze it without the rich peanut sauce. Cook and freeze the chicken separately, then make the sauce fresh when you’re ready to serve. This helps maintain the texture and flavor of the chicken.
