We used to be big soda drinkers, but thanks to rising costs, and our desires to be more health & earth conscience, we very rarely drink it anymore. Both my husband and I really love carbonated water though and even the price on seltzer has gone up tremendously. We have been eyeing the SodaStream for awhile now and wondered if would be a good fit for our home. SodaStream recently sent me the Genesis machine to review.
The Sodastream Genesis home soda maker comes in black and red and is very sleek and modern looking. It takes up barely any counter space, which I love because having a small kitchen space is at a premium. No batteries or electricity is needed either, which is a huge money saving plus. The $99.95 model that I received included the Genesis Home Soda Maker, a 60L Carbonator, 2 BPA-Free Reusable Carbonating Bottles and a variety pack of 12 Soda mixes.
After opening up our Soda Stream, we were astounded at how EASY it was to use. After putting the carbonator into the machine, we were ready to go! Sodastream recommends using cold water to start, so we keep our bottles filled up ready to go in the fridge.
|Fill up your bottle, attach easily to the machine, press the button and voila! 30 seconds later you have sparkling water!|
Now I love to have just some plain ole sparkling water, but every now and then it’s nice to add some fun flavor as well. We are loving how easy it is to have both now. We live in a condo and our parking lot is a little bit of a walk to our front door. Quite frankly?? I am lazy and cannot stand lugging in all of the soda bottles from the car to the house when it takes so many trips to bring everything in to begin with. I am loving not having to do that with my Sodastream!
There are over 60 different flavors to choose from! You can choose traditional flavors like Root Beer, Cola or Diet Cola, Ginger Ale or something completely different like Pink Grapefruit (one of my husband’s favorites) or the new Country Time Lemonade! If you like flavored sparkling water, you can even have that as well! After carbonating your water, it is super easy to add one of the different flavorings. There are clear directions on each bottle as to how much to add and there are no additional tools to measure it out, just simply use the cap. Because the bottles are not supersized, we find that we are able to drink the soda we make quicker and before it goes flat.
Like I said earlier, part of the reason we abandoned buying soda was because of the health costs. Sodastream soda mixes have more than half less the calorie and sugar content that a can of Coca-Cola or Pepsi! They do not contain any aspartame either, saccharine or high-fructose corn syrup. I think the Sodastream is cost effective as well. Each bottle of sodamix is the equivalent to 12L or 33 cans of soda. The range in price from $4.99 to $6.99 a bottle. On average here in my area of NJ a 12-pack of soda cans averages around $4. The Sodastream sodamixes bring the cost down to around $1.80 a 12-pack. That is a huge savings! Each carbonator will carbonate 120L of water. The Genesis came with one and they can be exchanged for a new carbonator at many retail locations like Wal-Mart or Bed Bath & Beyond. At Wal-Mart when I was looking at the SodaStream supplies, the Carbonator said that you will receive a discount off of a new carbonator by exchanging your old one.
