How to Make Red White and Blue Patriotic Cupcakes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 1/2 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Red, white and Blue Sprinkles

Directions

The first step is to prepare your cupcake tin with your cupcake liners. I like to use blue cupcake liners, since the cupcakes are red, but you can use different patriotic cupcake liners.

In a large bowl, using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar together in the bowl of an electric mixer. Then mix dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder on low speed.

In a small bowl, mix together oil, buttermilk, eggs, a few drops of red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla. The gel food coloring makes for bright colors, so you will only need a couple of drops.

You can make your own buttermilk by stirring 1 tbsp of vinegar into 1 cup of milk.

Slowly add the wet ingredients into your bowl, mixing well until combined on medium speed.

Pour cupcake batter into muffin tin to ⅔ full with your cake batter and bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of a cupcake.

While your cupcakes are cooling to room temperature on a wire rack, make your cream cheese frosting.

Add your frosting into a decorating bag with a piping tip. Pipe your frosting starting from the center of the cupcake. For a little color, add red white and blue jimmies on top of each cupcake.

How do you know when your cupcakes are done?

Cupcakes are finished when you poke the middle with a toothpick and it comes out clean. Also, the tops of the cupcakes will feel springy to the touch when they are baked through.

Make This Delicious Cupcake into Firecracker Cupcakes

Follow the original recipe above, but do not add any food coloring. Get 3 separate bowls and equally portion out cups of batter. Add food coloring to make red batter, blue batter and then plain white batter. Fill paper liners with equal amounts of each color, leaving them layered or creating color swirls and then baking. You can then top with red icing, blue icing or white frosting.
