Kicking off the Holidays with A Christmas Story- The Musical at Paper Mill Playhouse
I have two favorite holiday traditions that we do every year. One is watching A Christmas Story all day on Christmas on AMC. The other is seeing a Christmas play at a local theater. This year, we decided to combine both of our favorite traditions into a trip to the Paper Mill Playhouse to see A Christmas Story.
The last time I went to the Paper Mill Playhouse, it was for date night, so I was very excited to share a live theatrical performance with my children. They love the holidays just as much as I do. Since they often have no choice but to watch A Christmas Story on TV on Christmas, they are fully aware of the story. Since my brother lives close by to the theater, we met up with him as well and had a really fun Thanksgiving Eve complete with dinner at my favorite restaurant in Montclair, Leone’s. While I love seeing shows on Broadway, it is so much easier with two kids in tow to get to the “Broadway in your Backyard”, aka: Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ.
A Christmas Story is Paper Mill Playhouse’s holiday show for the season. If you aren’t familiar with the story and have been living under a rock for the last 30+ years here is the synopsis:
Ralphie wants only one thing for Christmas: An Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. ‘A Christmas Story: The Musical’ is the hilarious account of Ralphie’s desperate quest to ensure that this is most perfect of gifts ends up under his tree this Christmas. Straight from Broadway, this musical is based on the classic 1983 movie. It’s funny, heartfelt, and captures holiday wonder with such deliciously wicked wit that it is sure to delight children and grow-ups alike. Bring the whole family, again and again. The holiday movie that the whole world loves comes to musical life.
The show was funny and engaging and the kids really enjoyed the live theater experience. Because it was a family friendly show and there were many other children in the audience, it made the whole experience very relaxed and enjoyable.
The show is running through January 3rd, so you still have some time to not only see the show, but also give tickets as a gift.
About Paper Mill Playhouse: Paper Mill Playhouse is a not for profit organization that has been entertaining audiences with live theater performances since 1938. Upcoming shows include A Bronx Tale, Pump Boys and Dinettes, and Westside Story.
