Learning to Read with Learn with Homer
As my children are starting to grow older, I have been looking for new ways to supplement their education. I often find that they learn about the basics of a topic in school and then are often inquisitive about what they have heard about.
I recently tried out Learn with Homer with my two children ages 4 and 7.
Learn with Homer is a groundbreaking early learning program that was developed by top literacy experts and proven to produce results. Learn with Homer is currently available for children ages 3-7 on both the web and iPad. Created by an education reformer and based on the best teaching practices, Learn with Homer uses the latest science on how children learn to read and build knowledge. Learn with Homer focuses on the skills that will predict later academic success for your child.
Learn with Homer is the first digital product that teaches children how to read without the need for an adult to assist them, making it easier for families to help their kids get ahead and stay ahead. Learn with Homer offers more than than 1,000 lessons and activities including stories, games, history, science, art and music. Each part of the learning program has a specific purpose and these activities reinforce the lessons with real world context.
My kids loved that they were able to log on to Learn with Homer easily and they didn’t need any help from me to navigate through the learning program. I liked that the lessons introduced in Learn with Homer were unique compared to other learning programs I have seen in the past.
Storytime includes Fables, Poetry, Folklore and Holmer Stories which allow the kids to do their own free drawing at the end as a reward.
My son’s favorites can be found in Adventures in History, especially the lessons about biographies. He is a big history buff at just 7 years old. Other subjects include cool history, time travelers and the world bookshelf.
The stories and lessons in Learn wit Homer are engaging and interesting, making my children eager to learn and hear more.
The Homer Method™ teaches more than just phonics. We know that, for children to be enthusiastic readers, they need exposure to great literature and to dynamic nonfiction stories. Our rich library integrates with lessons, so that as children learn to read, they also read to learn. We infuse the lessons and stories with vocabulary in context and general knowledge topics, introduce classic literary tropes and genres, and encourage critical thinking with response questions and opportunities for kids to express what they’ve learned.
I love being able to track my children’s progress and actually listen to an audio recording of their voice reading a book and look their drawings.
There are also some great resources for parents like coloring pages and printable worksheets that correlate to the lessons that your child has completed in Learn with Homer for some additional offline reinforcement.
