The kids are back to school – are you ready? Lunches, snacks and good nutrition, as well as more free time for parents, homework struggles and organization. Gina of Embracing Imperfect decided to gather a group of bloggers to share their best Healthy Back to School tips with you!
Back to school can be a very hectic time for kids (and let’s face it, mom too). New schools, classrooms, teachers, rules, routines, friends, schedules and more. While it can all be exciting, it’s also very stressful and confusing.
My son had a very hard time last year in Kindergarten once the teacher started having the kids be more independent. I am so nervous that will continue this year into 1st grade when there will more expect of him to remember and do! I found part of it is my fault as I am not very organized either. So, I am trying to have better habits here at home as well.
A few things I have done to help him:
- I also bought him a watch. For some reason my son is very OCD about the time and I think he tends to get stressed out when he doesn’t know what time it is! This year he will be going to school a full day from 8:30-3:25 compared to the mere 8:30-11:15 that Kindergarten was, so I know the longer day will be hard at first.
- Last year, I never even thought to have school supplies like glue sticks at home for homework assignments. This year, I bought extra of everything on his school supply list to keep in a caddy at home to pull out at homework time.
- I am designating an area with Command Hooks to hang back packs and lunch boxes just like at school.
- If I don’t give my son directions step-by-step, even though we do the same things everyday (ie: put your glasses on, get dressed, put your shoes on, etc.), he won’t do it. I’ve made some visual direction cards for him to see (and learn how to read) what to do.
Here are some great resources that I have found to help with Back to School Organization:
