authentic italian gravy recipe
Growing up, the one thing I looked forward to the most was the weekly “Sunday Sauce” my grandmother would make, aka: her authentic Italian gravy recipe. Dinner was never anything extravagant, usually pasta, fresh Italian bread and a salad. But, the smell of the sauce simmering on the stove is something I will always remember. When my grandmother passed away nearly twenty years ago, almost all of her recipes went with her. At the age of barely 13, I never even thought to ask for her recipes or that I would even want them one day! I’ve spent most of my adult life in the kitchen trying to recreate the recipes I knew and loved from my childhood. Do you know how hard it is to do that based on childhood memories alone?
I’ve been working on perfecting my authentic italian gravy recipe for months now. Of course the best way to great flavor is with the best ingredients. I choose to use RedPack tomatoes. RedPack tomatoes are grown in the Midwest, where true seasons positively impact flavor — with just the right angle of the sun, perfect temperature, and soil that seems made for growing tomatoes.
RedPack tomatoes is celebrating winter with their own version of Carnevale, a traditional winter festival held for centuries in Italy with parties and great food. What better way to enjoy some delicious Italian food than with a fresh, homemade authentic italian gravy recipe?!
Thanks to the base of beef, veal and pork simmering with ground sausage, your sauce will have tons of flavor. Simmering for as long as possible is also key! Make your sauce in advance, so you have it for whenever you need a delicious sauce recipe!
