A Florida OJ Tailgate in NYC!
Orange Juice has always been a favorite of my son’s and quite frankly mine too! I love that by serving just one 8-ounce glass of 100% orange juice a day to my family, I am able to reduce their risk of certain diseases AND help them maintain a healthy diet. Citrus fruits like 100% orange juice are heart-healthy, fat-fee and cholesterol-free. When my son asks for a glass of orange juice, I am thrilled! It’s a quick way for him to get essential vitamins and nutrients like vitamin C, folate and potassium! Plus, unlike most fruit juices today, there is no added sugar.
I’ll never forget when we drove to Florida a few years ago and seeing all of the orange trees along the highway. There’s nothing better than fresh juice and The Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC) is working hard to keep to sustain the economic well-being of the Florida citrus growers, so that we can continue to enjoy it’s fruits.
If you have picky eaters like I do, the best way to add some delicious 100% orange juice to your family’s diet is through a splash of flavor in your favorite recipes! With the start of football season here, adding 100% orange juice to your tailgating menu will add a TOUCHDOWN of flavor for you and your guests!
With football games usually on Sunday or Monday nights, you’re already busy with the start of the work or school week. You need something quick & easy to feed a crowd and please everyone! My go to? Sloppy Joes! By adding just 1 cup of Florida Orange Juice, you’ll be adding that little ingredient making your guests wonder what your secret is!
Florida Sloppy O-Joes
- 9 ounces lean ground turkey
- ½ large onion, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, small, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin seed, ground
- 1 teaspoon coriander seed, ground
- 1 cup Florida orange juice
- 1 cup organic tomato juice
- 1 large sweet potato, baked and diced
- 4 whole-grain dinner rolls
In a medium sauté pan, sauté ground turkey over medium until cooked thoroughly. Remove turkey; reserve.
Sauté onion until translucent. Add the red pepper, ground cumin and coriander; sauté for 1 minute, then add the orange juice. Cook until orange juice is reduced by two-thirds; add the tomato juice and reserved cooked turkey.
Cook until tomato juice has reduced by two-thirds, add the diced baked sweet potato and stir until combined.
Split dinner rolls in half; spoon turkey mixture in center. Serve immediately.
