Throughout my childhood, I have fond memories of my uncle or another family member walking around with a giant video camera. You remember the type, right? Or maybe you don’t, if you like my children.

While at the time, it was great, all of those awesome memories on VHS? Completely useless.
Over the last five years or so, my family and I have talked a lot of services that can transfer our VHS tapes to DVD. While we really wanted to move forward, the problem was that we were worried that our precious family memories would be lost forever in the process. Every time I visited my parents and saw the countless number of VHS tapes from “back in the day”, I just couldn’t help be reminded of how they were longing to be watched.
Now that my children are getting older and asking questions about our family, I wanted them to see first hand what I remember. The only way to do this was to get on the ball and get these VHS’ transferred. My fears were set aside the moment I decided to have YesVideo! help me uncover these wonderful memories.
The process couldn’t have been any easier. I chose some VHS’ carefully packaged them up with the supplies YesVideo sent me and sent them straight out to YesVideo via UPS with tracking and all. Lucky for me, YesVideo sent me a Tweet when my videos were being sent on back to me.
It was funny when they arrived, because at the time I was just in one of those nostalgic moods. I was thinking about my Grandma and how much I missed her. I actually completely forgotten which VHS’ I sent out, so it was a pleasant surprise when they come back. Of course, I had to open them up right away. My personal friends all know how much I just love preserving memories, so this was a huge deal for me to have these back in my hands.
For some reason, I don’t know why I guess I just didn’t realize I would be getting back my original VHS tapes. Each DVD/VHS combo was packed together in a sealed bubble wrap envelope.
It’s time to get watching! I made the kids come sit with me. They thought it was the funniest thing!
I was blown away at the quality of these DVD’s. Being able to relive those moments was a feeling that I can only describe as emotional. My baby brother (who is now 24)’s christening video truly brought such raw emotion to me and I won’t lie, I cried. Being able to just hear voices of family members who I haven’t been able to in over 20 years was so wonderful. I was not expecting to have that sort of emotion bubble up inside of me. I’ve watched this particular video a few times now and I keep getting the same lump in my throat when I see my Grandmother (who died when I was 12) come onto the screen.
Video is so different than a photograph. Seeing someone moving and talking in all of the mannerism you remember is so emotional.
Of course, I couldn’t help but laugh at many parts too. Seeing little things that just jogged my memory. Like my grandpa Bob and how he always was playing cards – usually Pinochle – with my uncles.
Or this video of my Aunt Linda holding my brother. My Aunt was one of my favorite people and she passed away shortly after my son was born almost 6 years ago. Hearing her voice in the video was so precious for me.
So, now that I know I can trust YesVideo with my precious life memories, I am eager to get more shipped out to them ASAP! Wouldn’t this make such a special gift for a loved one?
