#GrowingGreen The Rebirth of the American Chesnut Tree

We’re Parents and I have teamed up with 8 other bloggers to bring you an Earth Day Extravaganza!   You will find recipes, gardening tips, way to reuse and recycle, crafts to do with the kids and more! To make this even more amazing, we’ve teamed up with a host of amazing sponsors to make three of our readers very happy! From Toter to BrylaneHome, Jiffy Plants, to Ferry Morse Seeds, Lifetime, The Tasteful Garden, and Gardener’s Supply Company, our sponsors are making sure our readers are ready to get their green thumbs working!
You can follow along all the excitement by using #GrowingGreen and Visiting our Pinterest Board “Growing Green for Earth Day”

My husband thoroughly enjoys the rewards that gardening and cultivating can bring.  This Spring, his goal is to help in the regrowth of the American Chestnut Tree.

The American Chestnut Tree was once a dominant part of American culture.  From being a strong food source for humans and animals to the booming lumber industry it helped create.   “According to legend, the American chestnut tree was so plentiful that a squirrel could travel the chestnut canopy from Georgia to Maine without touching the ground.” *{source}

Once known as “The Mighty Giant” to most in the early part of the 1900s, the American Chestnut Tree met it’s demise and by 1950 it had been eradicated from American forests.  Sadly, the Chestnut Blight, a fungus imported from an Asian Chestnut Tree killed the entire population off.

A few Chestnut trees were able to survive and within the last decade or so there has been a big push for it’s reintroduction into American forests.

This past fall, my husband purchased a good amount of Chestnut seeds.  They spent their epic cold winter in my refrigerator.  Around mid-January, they started to sprout!  Finally, the chance for frost was over and it was time to plant them in containers.  We used a mixture of Perlite and potting soil.  Make sure to protect your young plants from critters like squirrels.  Since the Chestnut is extremely nutritious, this is a very tasty treat for them.  They can quickly ruin all of your hard work!

Right now, our young plants are just soaking up the sun’s warmth and growing big and tall.  Hopefully, soon we will have nice healthy Chestnut trees that we can plant in the ground and help the reintroduction of America’s “Mighty Giant”.

    So sad that they were damaged. We have black chestnuts and water chestnuts in the yard. Those nuts are like cannonballs when they fall, though! Ha!

    Though I noticed that the American Chestnut did not seem to be discussed the same as yesteryear along with the elm and the maple, I had no idea what had befallen this beautiful tree, or that it had suffered this plight. Thank you for sharing this important story, it is terrific that you have taken on the new emerging growth of the Mighty American Chestnut Tree for Earth Day. Thanks so much for sharing the renewed interest!
